Why Alysia Montano wears a flower in her hair during every race.
Even though she grew up playing football, shooting hoops and running races against all the boys in her neighborhood, U.S. 800-meter champion Alysia Montano never wanted to be thought of as one of them.
As a result, she started wearing a flower behind her right ear to remind the boys they were getting beat by a girl.
The flower remains Montano’s trademark even though her opponents are now world-class female middle-distance runners.
"The flower to me means strength with femininity," Montano said in June after winning the 800 at the U.S. Olympic trials. "I think that a lot of people say things like you run like a girl. That doesn’t mean you have to run soft or you have to run dainty. It means that you’re strong."

I don't see anything particularly wrong with showing your tattoos (and nola isn't the most conservative city at all), but I can't speak for the judges! I would say if you think that it'll affect your score, better safe than sorry. But if you're just worried about the look, I feel like there's nothing wrong with it :) just my two cents, good luck at the feis!

Thanks for your input! You’re right, t’s the judges I’m thinking about, mostly. And I’ll of course ask my TC and see what he thinks.

I personally think that it would be more appropriate for a feis to wear a long sleeve shirt or leotard to cover up the tattoos for competing

Hey, that’s fair, no need to be anon for that :)

Feis and tattoos?

Sooo I would say I’m a moderately tattooed person (four “loose” tattoos and a half sleeve in progress). I’ve basically been cultivating the perfect Irish dance tattoo locations: they’re all covered by normal feis attire.

HOWEVER, I’m headed to the Irish Channel feis in New Orleans this November, and it’s a “casual dress feis”. That means the required gear includes a mandatory T-shirt and there is a pretty good chance that up to three of my tattoos might be visible.

So, do I go extra conservative and wear a long sleeve shirt or leotard underneath the T-shirt? Or do I just go for it in my own naturally modified glory? What say you, Irish dancers of Tumblr? (I also have a nose stud if it changes anything.)
